WHO YOU FOLLOW MATTERS.
Jesus isn't looking for fans who admire Him. He's looking for DISCIPLES who follow Him.
And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” - Matthew 4:19 ESV
1. FOLLOW JESUS
“Follow me…” — Matthew 4:19
Discipleship begins with SURRENDER
Immediately they left their nets and followed him. - Matthew 4:20 ESV
You can't FOLLOW JESUS while insisting on staying exactly where you are
And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” - Luke 9:23 ESV
You can believe IN Jesus without actually FOLLOWING Jesus.
2. BECOME LIKE JESUS
“Follow me, and I WILL MAKE YOU…” - Matthew 4:19
Jesus loves you where you are, but HE LOVES YOU TOO MUCH to leave you where you are.
For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. - Romans 8:29 NLT
The goal of discipleship isn't simply: KNOW MORE ABOUT JESUS. It’s: BECOME MORE LIKE JESUS.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. - Galatians 5:22–23 ESV
Discipleship isn't measured by INFORMATION accumulated but TRANSFORMATION experienced.
I'm not who I used to be. JESUS IS MAKING ME!
3. LIVE LIKE JESUS
“…and I will make you FISHERS OF MEN.” - Matthew 4:19
We aren't just saved FROM something. We're saved FOR something.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. - Matthew 28:19 ESV
A disciple doesn't just follow Jesus, they HELP SOMEBODY ELSE follow Jesus.
The goal is not to be where somebody else is. The goal is to take YOUR next step.
FOLLOW JESUS. BECOME LIKE JESUS. LIVE LIKE JESUS.
JESUS STILL SAYS FOLLOW ME.
